Tip #3: Watch the set to gauge the hitter's options

Watch the play of your opponents through the net as they set up a hit. You can gauge from the set—its arc and height, distance off the net, and placement relative to the sideline, and from the hitter's approach where the ball is likely to be placed. Don't wait until the ball has crossed the net to react. You'll be more effective and have more time to react if you watch the set develop to gauge the hitter's options.
